Surgical Stapler Advantage
Surgical staplers were developed in response to concerns about the healing of traditional sutures. Evidence seemed to suggest that sutures were more prone to leaks and separation, although further study indicates that when placed properly, conventional sutures are perfectly safe. However, the development of the surgical stapler also created a number of advantages, including speed, accuracy, and evenness of wound closure, which made the stapler a useful operating room tool. Both stapling and suturing are taught to surgeons, and training about the appropriate settings for each technique is also provided.
Surgical Stapler Types and applications
Now surgical staplers are either disposable, made of plastic, or reusable, made of stainless steel. Both types are generally loaded using disposable cartridges.
The staple line may be straight, curved or circular. Circular staplers are used for end-to-end anastomosis after bowel resection or, somewhat more controversially, in esophagogastric surgery. The instruments may be used in either open or laparoscopic surgery, different instruments are used for each application. Laparoscopic staplers are longer, thinner, and may be articulated to allow for access from a restricted number of trocar ports.
There are several surgical stapler designs on the market, intended for different types of staple placement. Some surgeons like to use disposable staplers, which are fitted with disposable cartridges and used on a single patient. Others use reusable staplers made from stainless steel. In this case, a disposable cartridge is used, and the stapler is sterilized after use so that it can be used on another patient. Reusable staplers generate less surgical waste, but energy is required to sterilize them, so the net environmental impact when compared to a disposable product is not very different.
Although most surgical staples are made of titanium, stainless steel is more often used in some skin staples and clips. Titanium produces less reaction with the immune system and, being non-ferrous, does not interfere significantly with MRI scanners, although some imaging artifacts may result. Synthetic absorbable (bioabsorbable) staples are also now becoming available, based on polyglycolic acid, as with many synthetic absorbable sutures.
Titanium staples are never solely titanium; they all have some amount of nickel content. Patients who have allergies to nickel, for example cheap jewelry causes a rash or earrings cause break-outs, oozing, or itching, should discuss nickel allergies with their surgeon.
Toptree offers very wide range of stapling units that are widely used in the modern surgery.
The complete line of the mechanical stapling systems includes:
- circular staplers
- linear staplers
- linear cutting staplers
- Skin Stapler and Removers
- Curved Cutter Stapler
- Endo Cutter Stapler and Reload Units
The circular stapler is used in general surgery, thoracic surgery, surgical treatment of obesity and in colo-rectal surgery, to perform end-to-end, side-to-end, and side-to-side anastomoses.
This type of stapler is available in diameters:
* curved - from 21mm up to 33mm
* straight - from 33mm up to 34 mm.
The stapler utilizes titanium staples in circular staggered assembly of two concentric rings inside the staples-containing cartridge. The circular blade automatically cuts off any tissue excess during staple release and creation of circular anastomosis. The stapler can be easily operated by complete squeeze of the trigger handle. Dimension of anastomosis is defined by the size of the selected circular staples-containing cartridge.
Compact construction and modern design concordant with modern standards ensure patient’s and user’s safety.
Disposable linear stapler
The linear stapler is used in abdominal surgery, thoracic surgery, gynaecology, and paediatric surgery. Generally, the stapler is used for anastomosing of organs and tissues. This type of linear stapler is available in wide range of sizes: from 30mm up to 90 mm (effective length of the anastomosis).
Two staples’ heights are available for each size of the stapler, which through the control pressure facilitates anastomosing of thick and tissues.
The linear stapler is loaded with two staggered rows of titanium staples. The stapler can be easily operated by the complete squeeze of the trigger handle. The effective length of anastomosis is defined by the size of selected stapler.
There are two types of the linear staplers manufactured by Toptree – automatic and manually operated – so that requirements of all the users are met.
Appropriate cartridges that can be used with linear staplers ensure cost-effective, single patient use of the product.
Disposable linear cutting stapler
The linear cutting stapler is used in abdominal surgery, thoracic surgery, gynecology and pediatric surgery. Generally, the stapler is used for resection and transection of organs or tissues.
This type of linear cutting stapler is available in sizes ranging from 55 mm to 100mm (effective length of the anastomosis and transection). Two staples’ heights are available for each size of the stapler, which facilitate anastomosing of thick and thin tissues.
The linear cutting stapler is loaded with two double staggered rows of titanium staples and simultaneously cuts and divides tissue between the two double rows. Sharp knife is built into the stapler body. The stapler can be easily operated by complete squeeze of the handles followed by shifting of side knob forth and back. Built-in cam, distance pin and precise closing mechanism co-work to facilitate parallel jaws closing followed by proper staples formation. The effective length of anastomosis and transection is defined by the size of selected stapler.
Appropriate cartridges that can be used with linear cutting staplers ensure cost-effective, single patient use of the product.
Skin staplers and skin staples removers
Skin staplers are modern products used for skin closure after surgical procedures. They are used in various surgical interventions like general surgery, obstetric, gynaecology, orthopedics, urology, thoracic, cardiac and plastic surgery.
Due to variety of versions the most suitable product can be used in the specific surgical situation.
Skin staplers offered by Toptree may be loaded with 5 types of staples (standard, wide and high). Each stapler can contain 15, 25, 35 ,45, 55 staples.
Staples can be removed by special remover.
The Curved Cutter Stapler is Suitably used For Transection,Resection and anastomosis in alimentary canal surgery such as stomach and enteron.
The Endo linear cutter staplers have applications in abdominal, gynecologic ,pediatric and thoracic surgery for resection ,transection and creation of anastomosis.
This stapler is sterilized by γ-ray and is supplied for clinical use in a sterilized packing.
Disposable Endo Cutter Stapler places two, triple-staggered rows of titanium staples and simultaneously divides the
tissue between the two, triple-staggered rows. The size of the staples is determined by the selection of the 2.5
mm,3.5 mm or 4.8 mm single cartridge. The ENDO LINEAR CUTTER staplers will accommodate any of the straight
single use loading unit sizes that are available in the 30 mm, 45 mm and 60 mm lines. When using the ENDO LINEAR
CUTTER staplers with the 4.8 single use cartridge, it must be inserted into a 15 mm trocar sleeve. The instrument
may be reloaded and fired up t0 25 times in a single procedure. NOTE: This instrument can accommodate the 60-2.5,
3.5, 4.8 mm cartridges.
